Let Your Light Shine- New group setup

Let Your Light Shine are a new community group based in Prestwich that provide holiday activities for children. Sherrie started the group after hosting a party for children in her son’s primary school class where she observed that many children were struggling with social isolation, which was affecting their mental health and development of social skills.

Sherrie collected feedback from other parents and teachers to help shape the community groups aims and activities. This led to Sherrie coming up with the idea for Let Your Light Shine to encourage every individual to shine their light for the betterment of the whole community.

“I was very impressed with how the children interacted with each other under Sherrie’s guidance. The children were having fun, (the adults too) but at the same time, they were developing strong, social and emotional skills.” – Delories, Headteacher

Following this, Sherrie and her committee members met with Katherine, our Capacity Building Development Officer to learn more about setting up a community group. Katherine provided support to Sherrie and the committee, assisting with the drafting of a constitution for the group and the development of new policies, including Children’s Safeguarding. Let Your Light Shine were able to open a bank account using their using their newly adopted constitution which has made them eligible for funding applications.

Sherrie also attended our training courses for new groups including ‘The Essential Trustee’ and ‘Funding Hints and Tips’. Using the learnings from these courses, Let Your Light Shine have been able to improve their governance processes and apply for funding grants.

The group has also benefitted from attending our new Prestwich Connections Meeting where they received a donation of £100 from a local organisation to contribute towards their insurance costs. Through our support and guidance, Let Your Light Shine are now ready to start operating as a community group.
