What to do if you have concerns about a child or young person?
We all have a responsibility for the safety of children and young people. If you have any concerns about the safety or welfare of a child, it is important to report it.
If a child is in immediate danger, you should contact the Emergency Services – 999 or Greater Manchester Police – 101.
Referrals to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)
If there is no immediate danger, or you need advice or information, you can telephone the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub on 0161 253 5678 (outside normal office hours 0161 253 6606). This is a team of experienced children’s services professionals who are trained to deal with sensitive issues. They will ask you a few short questions to find out how best to deal with your concern.
Allegations and Concerns about a Member of Staff or Volunteer
Community and voluntary sector organisations should contact the Local Authority Designated Officer when they have information that suggests an adult who works or volunteers with children may have harmed a child.
In addition to discussing a concern with an appropriate manager or designated officer in your own organisation, you should contact the LADO regarding any allegation concerning a member of staff or a volunteer that suggests they:
- Behaved in a way that has harmed or may have harmed a child
- Possibly committed a criminal offence against children
- Behaved in a way that indicates they are unsuitable to work with children
- Behaved towards a child/children in a way that indicates that they may pose a risk of harm to children.
To make a referral to the LADO, please complete the LADO Referral form. If you are unsure if your concerns meet the threshold, the LADO in Bury can be contacted via email: lado@bury.gov.uk. Please provide your contact details and a brief outline of what the concern may be. The LADO will get back to you during weekdays (Monday and Friday) between 9am and 5pm for an initial conversation and if necessary, will send you a referral form to complete so the necessary action can be taken.
